EDITOR:

Time marches on - even when we don’t notice.

But it is worth noting that with the death of Paul Jenkins, a number of small but significant parts of Island have passed with him.

The first historical matter is that Paul was the first baby born in what then was the brand-new Prince Edward Island Hospital. That hospital served islanders well for 50 years when it was replaced by the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in 1982.

The second matter of some significance is that with Paul’s passing the second generation of the owners and operators of Jenkins Transfer has passed. Jenkins Transfer was known to everyone within 50 miles. I don’t know the dates but the transfer was born in the infancy of the trucking industry on P.E.I. It was established by Ralph Jenkins, Paul’s father.

Paul collected antique vehicles and for years he would drive the antique Jenkins Transfer van in the Gold Cup Parade.

He and the family business made a mark in business and P.E.I. history for more than 90 years.

Condolences to the family.

Bob Hutcheson,

Charlottetown
