I could not sit by and let this "fake news" go by. Surely the editor must check items from Torstar Syndicated Services for worthiness!

The petty drivel entitled “Mr. Sheer builds his dream house” (Heather Mallick, July 19) is not worthy of print as it is a totally biased and inaccurate essay.

If the author was conversant with the maintenance of public buildings, which Stornoway is, in honesty she would not try to shock Canadian taxpayers into believing that the maintenance measures being undertaken are at Mr. Scheer’s direction but are a part of the maintenance program for public infrastructure. The Opposition leader’s official residence is, like other “public” buildings, aging and in need of annual maintenance. Also, the fact that Mr Sheer dwells in Ottawa at public expense is no different than MP Lawrence MacAulay with his residence and all other MPs and public servants from across Canada who are required to have accommodations in Ottawa or the PM himself in the “cottage” on the Governor General’s grounds. They are all paid for by the public and when the accommodation is a designated residence, maintained by the public.

As far as taking someone’s advice, please be better prepared with factual information and not a petty, biased approach designed to misinform the Canadian taxpayer.

Please Mr. Editor, in this time of “fake news” we need honest contributions. We need a balanced and honest reporting service that will educate citizens, not fill their heads with drivel. Please be that newspaper.
