EDITOR:
I am writing with regard to P.E.I.'s climate change mitigation efforts, in particular the planned conversion to forest of some provincially-owned land. I applaud this plan, which will not only sequester carbon but also protect some vulnerable ecosystems such as streams, marshes and estuaries.

Basin Head is P.E.I.'s only national Marine Protected Area. There have been great efforts and much money spent in the past several years to bring that estuary back to health. As long as soil, chemical and fertilizer run-off continue from farms along the basin, these efforts will be fruitless. Discontinuing agricultural leases of all provincially owned land adjacent to it is the absolute best next step to take in order to protect it.
Developing walking trails, with educational signage promoting the health of the estuary, would allow greater public access to seascapes and also be an opportunity for rural development.
