EDITOR:
With the municipal election looming, it is the considered opinion of this writer that Basil Stewart should seek the position of Mayor of Summerside.
Sometime during the past four years he must have figured out what caused mayor and council to give someone in California $1.2 million of taxpayers’ money. Our citizens have not received a reasonable explanation to date, and no one was ever held accountable.
In his final interview on CBC television, he replied that "As mayor, one must keep their ear to the ground," "Think outside the box," and "be able to see around corners." I say that as taxpayers our citizens deserve some real answers.
When it was announced that our community would get the GST tax centre in lieu of losing CFB Summerside, one of the conditions was that the municipality would upgrade the infrastructure to ensure greater access to and from the tax centre to accommodate the work force. But, more than 20 years later we are still dealing with the dangerous intersection at Pope Road and Central Street that has not been addressed. This situation begs to be rectified. This is an accident waiting to happen.
If I might suggest a campaign slogan for the nominee, perhaps he could paraphrase former U.S.A. President Herbert Hoover: “A sewer hookup for every household and a chicken in every fryer.”
I cannot support this candidate should he nominate. But why not nominate? Who knows, he might even win two polls this time around.
