It is becoming increasingly tedious and distressing to hear/read/watch the reporting of every bombastic, offensive word, criticism and tweet of the U.S. president (much of which is not even accurate).
This past week, he has persistently blasted NATO members for “not paying their fair share” in military spending to the organization. Perhaps it is time to examine his accusations in a different light.
Since the Second World War, almost all the armed conflicts around the world have been U.S. initiated — the Korean War, Vietnam, Iraq, Afghanistan being the most well-known. NATO members have sent troops, weapons and more into these places at each country’s own expense because they are members of the alliance.
Also refugees and displaced people from Iraq, Afghanistan, Syria etc. are fleeing. Where to? Canada and the EU! Who is footing the bill to care for these displaced people as they seek asylum? Canada and the EU!
Our own prime minister, in his measured response to Trump’s rants, carefully and quietly suggested that Canada’s Latvian troop extension was “demonstrating a commitment beyond mere dollars.” Then posting the questions: “Are countries stepping up consistently with the capacities NATO needs? Are we leading in different opportunities? Are we contributing the kinds of resources and demonstrating the kind of commitment to the alliance that always needs to be there?” An excellent response, and I believe Canada and the EU are ‘leading in different opportunities’ in their approach to refugees at great cost to all levels of government. Think on these things, Mr. President.
