EDITOR:
I am writing this letter about affordable housing. To me, affordable housing means housing for low-income people in which the rent is geared to their income. That is the only housing they can afford without going without food and medicines.
Right now, this kind of housing is not available to single people who are not seniors. We can’t even get on the waiting list. This includes many people with intellectual disabilities. There should be affordable housing for everyone who needs it. People should not be discriminated against because they are single.
The government must build more of this type of housing in our communities. We also need more coop housing in which there are apartments available for low income people with rents which are set according to their income. These new apartments should be built across P.E.I. – in rural and urban areas. It would be good if those who are going to live there have input in the decision making about how they are built.
