Having recently visited wonderful P.E.I. for the fourth time, I returned to my home on Vancouver Island and pondered the fascinating history of our Island and have come to the following conclusion of alternative facts, otherwise known as a ‘fairy-tale.’
A long, long time ago, on the east coast of Canada, there existed a magical kingdom where no humans existed but millions of potatoes thrived. Hence, it was known as ‘Spud Island.’
It was ruled by a benevolent potato who was known as King Edward. He married Queen Charlotte. She gave birth to a baby boy potato and he was also named Edward, and naturally became Prince Edward. His parents were so proud of him that they even changed the name of the Island to Prince Edward Island.
When the prince reached the ae of 20, he approached his father, who was playing the ‘tuber,’ an ancient musical instrument and announced that he had fallen madly in love with someone who was young, beautiful and really a sweet potato and worked as a news broadcaster for the local CBC television station.
The king, being very perceptive, told his son that he could figure out who he was referring to because he usually watched the local news. With a chuckle, he said that he was therefore a spec-’tater.’ The king then told the prince that he couldn't sanction the union. “But why?” the Prince wanted to know. Because, said the king, (wait for it), “She is a just a common'tater.’
