Charlottetown is looking to expand its vegetable planters program by adding three planters at Windsor Park.

This location has been selected because of interest expressed from the neighbourhood, ample parking space and a good fit with the fruit trees that have already been planted at the site.

The sustainability department will cover the costs of the materials and the parks and recreation department will build the planters over the winter and will be installed in the spring of 2019.

It was the consensus of the sustainability committee to cover the cost of materials — $1,050 to build the planters ($350 each) and to approve a signage budget of $50 so that the purpose of the planters is clearly communicated to residents.

These planters already exist in several parks throughout the city. Residents are encouraged to help themselves to the vegetables in an effort to ensure more access to healthy food and get people excited about growing food in small spaces.
