Some members of Montague council are expressing concern over recent break-ins into Kings County churches.
RCMP are continuing to investigate two incidents of churches being broken into during the last several months.
One of the break-ins occurred at St. George’s Roman Catholic Church on December 29, said RCMP.
Prior to that, a safe containing money and documents was taken during a break and enter and theft at St. Mary’s Parish Church in Montague in late November. That was the second break-in to occur at St. Mary’s Parish Church in the fall, with little being taken during the first incident.
Coun. Debbie Johnston raised the issue while council received an RCMP report during last week’s meeting.
“It seemed to be quite a significant operation,” said Johnston. “That’s what concerns me.”
Staff Sgt. Howard Fitzpatrick told council while no charges have been laid yet, the investigation is very active.
“It seemed to be someone who knew what they were doing,” said Fitzpatrick, adding that investigators had a couple of individuals in mind. “We have some people in the area, people we’re aware of who are quite prone to this kind of behaviour.”
