CHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. - When it comes to a potential new leader for the PC Party, a few names can be crossed off the list after all of the Opposition MLAs announced they don’t plan on seeking the leadership.
On Monday, party leader James Aylward announced he was stepping down less than one year after winning the job.
Today, the Opposition MLAs issued a joint statement, saying their collective focus was on the well-being of all Islanders and not on individual egos or personal ambitions.
“We believe that standing united and working together we will achieve our team’s shared goal of providing Islanders with a fresh perspective and a proven alternative to the current government,” the statement read.

Aylward’s announcement came as the PC Party struggles in the polls, including the most recent released earlier this month that saw support for the party drop to 20 per cent of decided voters.
That put the PCs in third place well behind the Liberals and the Greens.
Aylward will stay on as leader until the party picks his replacement and said he plans to run in the next election to retain his seat.
