P.E.I. man sentenced to seven years for drugs and weapons charges

A P.E.I. man who was caught in a motel room with cocaine and other items associated with the drug trade was sentenced Monday to a total of seven years in prison on multiple charges.

Kenneth Bradford King, 35, appeared before Justice Terri MacPherson in P.E.I. Supreme Court in Charlottetown for sentencing after previously pleading guilty to charges that included possessing cocaine for the purpose of trafficking.

King also pleaded guilty to possessing cocaine, possessing methamphetamine, possessing a weapon without a licence, driving while disqualified and three counts of breaching an undertaking.

Federal Crown attorney Chera-Lee Gomez read an agreed statement of facts in court detailing the offences King committed over several months.

The court heard Charlottetown police executed a search warrant at a motel in January after getting information from a confidential source that King had cocaine.

They found King with about 17 grams of cocaine, including some in baggies, six types of steroids, several blue pills, one pound of a cutting agent and more than $1,000 in cash.

There was also a variety of drug paraphernalia in the room, including scales and two cellphones.

A sign on the room’s door said, “come back with a warrant,” although defence lawyer Brendan Hubley said King didn’t put it there.

In March, Charlottetown police searched a home on Kensington Road after getting information King had weapons.

They found a shotgun and shotgun shells during the search. King was under a lifetime weapons prohibition at the time.

On July 6, Charlottetown police responded to a call about a possible impaired driver on Tideview Court and when they arrived found a Harley Davidson motorcycle lying in the middle of the street.

A witness showed the police a video of King struggling to get back on the motorcycle before fleeing the scene. King was prohibited from driving at the time.

Later that month, Charlottetown police were called to assist with a search in Summerside and found King had a spring-loaded knife, methamphetamine pills, cocaine and more than $800 in cash.

In delivering the sentence, MacPherson talked about the harm drugs cause in society.

“The gravity of this particular offence is significant,” she said.

MacPherson gave King credit of 329 for time served and ordered him to pay $1,700 in victim surcharges.
