An eight-ounce steak.
Three steak sandwiches.
About a dozen bacon-wrapped scallops, two desserts, a few glasses of milk and a double espresso.
That’s what James Franklin Little, 50, ate at a restaurant one day in June before leaving without paying.
On Wednesday, Little appeared before Judge John Douglas in Charlottetown for a trial on charges of fraudulently obtaining food and breaching his probation.
It all started when Little went to the Redwater Rustic Grille on June 29.
A waiter who was working that day testified Little ordered a few rounds of bacon-wrapped scallops appetizers, several six-ounce steak sandwiches and an eight-ounce tenderloin steak that came with more scallops and shrimp.
His bill came to about $281.
The waiter described it as a good encounter, saying Little was relaxed and made small talk after finishing the food.
“Everybody in the restaurant thought he was a legend because he ate so much food,” the waiter said.
Trouble started when Little went to pay his bill.
The waiter testified that when Little opened his wallet he said he didn’t have his debit card with him.
He left two pieces of ID behind and returned later that night to say he couldn’t find his card and the bank was closed, the waiter said.
The waiter didn’t finish his testimony because after the trial resumed in the afternoon, Crown attorney Gerald Quinn said he told Little if he paid the bill and admitted his guilt the Crown would stay the charges.
At first Little wouldn’t agree to the deal, saying he didn’t agree with the amount on the bill.
He eventually accepted, pleaded guilty and paid the restaurant’s manager who was in the courtroom.
