P.E.I. doctors ratify four-year agreement with government

STRATFORD, P.E.I. – Island physicians have ratified a new agreement between the Medical Society of P.E.I., the Department of Health and Wellness and Health P.E.I.

The four-year agreement is retroactive to April 1, 2015, with overall annual funding increases of 0 per cent (April 1, 2015), 0 per cent (April 1, 2016), 3 per cent (April 1, 2017) and 2 per cent (April 1, 2018).

The agreement was endorsed by 91 per cent of the voting membership on April 25.

It also introduces a Memorandum of Understanding to formalize the partnership between Health P.E.I. and physicians so the two can collaborate in decisions around how care is delivered to patients.

The new agreement expires March 31, 2019.

Other contract highlights

• Overall $5 million investment

• A new process to add and change fee codes outside of bargaining

• Funding to support physicians in leadership development to enhance their impact in health system decision-making

• Funding for a new physician health program

• A new practice succession planning program to support a smooth transition for patients when new physicians take over a practice from retiring physicians
