Two Charlottetown women in their early 20s were sentenced Monday in Prince Edward Island Supreme Court to serve four months in the provincial correctional centre for their part in a home invasion and robbery in May 2012.

Identical four-month sentences were handed down to Kaylee Frances McLean, age 20, and Jennifer Lee Wakelin, age 22.

Both women were originally charged with armed robbery, which carries a mandatory minimum sentence of four years in a federal correctional facility.

But after a careful review of the facts in this case the Crown accepted guilty pleas from both women to the lesser charge of break and enter into a dwelling house.

McLean, Wakelin and two males travelled to a mobile home located in the Emyvale area on the date in question with the sole intention of robbing Dean Fairhurst, a known drug dealer.

They were to take both cash and drugs from Fairhurst.

Chase Roper and a second male, whose name is currently the subject of a publication ban, kicked open the door to the mobile home and entered while screaming "police, police."

Both men had their faces covered and both carried guns. The guns were not loaded but the victim had no way of knowing that.

They located Fairhurst, kicked him a number of times, held a gun to his head and demanded to know where he kept his drugs and cash.

They made off with 300 grams of cocaine and several hundred Dilaudid pills.

Roper was subsequently sentenced to four years for armed robbery.

The second male is still awaiting trial.

Neither McLean nor Wakelin entered the Fairhurst residence with the men.

But the court was told both had gone there with full knowledge of what was going to take place.

One of them, McLean, had even driven to the area the day before with two men to see where the mobile home was located.

Upon release from custody McLean and Wakelin will both be placed on probation for two years.

The court was told that both women have made major efforts to turn their lives around and become contributing members of society.

Both have addressed addictions issues.

Both have secured full-time employment and received glowing recommendations from their employers.

Both have made plans for the future that involve further education and career development.

Both have been fully cooperative with the police investigation into this incident and have agreed to testify against Roper's co-accused and against the man who planned the robbery, whose identity is also protected by a publication ban.
