The University of Prince Edward Island’s student union president has resigned less than two months after taking office.
The student union says a group of councillors put forward motion to impeach president Chelsea Perry during a meeting on Monday.
The motion cited a lack of confidence in Perry “to adequately fulfill the requirements and expectations of the position of President of the UPEISU.”
The motion would’ve had to pass at the council’s next meeting on March 25 after it was publicized to the student body for a period of one week.
On Tuesday, however, Perry handed in a letter of resignation.
“It is with a heavy heart that I ask you to please accept my formal notice of resignation from the Position of President of the UPEI Student Union, effective immediately,” Perry writes in the letter. “This past month has been one of the greatest learning experiences of my life, and I would like to thank you and the student body for giving me the opportunity to serve you.”
Perry, a first-year political science student, was elected as student union president in late January byelection that followed the resignation of Hammad Ahmed earlier that month.
Ahmed resigned abruptly, several months before his term as president was up. He did not provide a reason in his resignation letter.
According to the student union’s policies, council will have to formally accept Perry’s resignation by vote at the March 25 meeting in order for it to go into effect.
Perry’s term would have come to an end May 1.
