Firefighters responded to the incident at Pho Hung restaurant at about 7:25 p.m., with a portion of lower Queen Street being closed to traffic for more than hour.
Deputy chief Tim Mamye said it only took about a minute for members to arrive on scene, helping prevent the fire from spreading.
“Fortunately, it was our Monday night training night so the guys were on the trucks and down here within minutes, it wasn’t much more than a minute,” said Mamye.
No one was injured in the blaze, with the restaurant being closed at the time.
Mamye said it appeared the fire originated in the basement, which is a storage area for the restaurant, with the department still investigating the cause of the blaze.
There are also apartment units above the restaurant.
Mamye said there were individuals in the apartments when the fire broke out.
“They were on their way out once we arrived. We just made sure everybody was out safely,” he said.
Mamye said he didn’t think the building suffered much damage, but more would be known after the investigation is over.
