Two displaced in St. Gilbert, P.E.I., fire; Red Cross assisting homeowners

ST.-GILBERT, P.E.I. - Two people are temporarily homeless after a mid-morning fire in St. Gilbert, near Wellington, Wednesday.

Firefighters from the Wellington Fire Department were called out shortly after 10 a.m. They were assisted by the Tyne Valley and Miscouche Fire Departments.

Firefighters managed to contain the flames to the second floor and attic.

The structure was saved but there is extensive smoke and water damage, making the home uninhabitable.

There were no injuries as a result of the fire.

The Canadian Red Cross is helping the homeowners with temporary lodging, food and personal supplies. It is believed the owners do have home insurance.

The fire marshall’s office was on scene and is investigating. Firefighters battled hotspots and flare-ups until around 3 p.m.
