Trails have reopened at Skmaqn-Port-la-Joye-Fort Amherst National Historic Site following a report of coyotes.
Safety concerns prompted the closure late last month, when a man said two coyotes approached him and followed for a period before going back into the woods.
After monitoring and an assessment with wildlife conflict experts, trails are once again open.
Visitors are asked to take precautions when visiting, and to leave the area if there are fresh signs or feeding areas.
If you encounter an aggressive coyote:
– Do not run.
– Back away slowly and do not turn your back.
– Act big.
– Keep your dog on a leash. Dogs must be kept on a leash of no more than three metres in length.
– Never approach and keep your distance. Wildlife may become aggressive if they feel threatened.
– Hike with friends and a solid walking stick during daylight hours. Keep children and pets close by.
– Tell someone where you're going.
– Do not feed animals.
Coyotes remain at the site and visitors are encouraged to report sightings and interactions to Parks Canada Dispatch at 1-877-852-3100.
