A woman who stole money from her children’s school band and minor baseball team will be going to jail after she was sentenced in provincial court Tuesday.
Julie Hennessey, 40, appeared before provincial court Judge Nancy Orr in Charlottetown after she previously pleaded guilty to stealing $3,110.70 from the Bluefield High School band and $733 from the Cornwall Mosquito A baseball team.
Orr sentenced her to 30 days for the theft from the band and 15 days for stealing from the baseball team to be served consecutively.
Hennessey had volunteered to look after the money for her son’s baseball team and the school band, but after numerous attempts from other parents to get answers about where that money went the police were eventually called in to investigate.
In the band’s case it was money raised to pay for a trip, which the school ended up paying for so the students wouldn’t miss out after Hennessey stole the money.
Her daughter, who was a band member, found out about the theft while she was at school.
Hennessey said she took the money because she wasn’t able to get caught up on bills.
The court heard that Hennessey has been seeing a social worker who was shocked to hear she had stolen the money and said it must have been someone else with the same name.
Orr said that was an indication of how little information Hennessey was giving her social worker about her situation and she couldn’t expect to make a lot of progress without being forthcoming.
Although she pleaded guilty and accepted responsibility, Orr said all of Hennessey’s other activities indicated she avoided responsibility.
Along with the jail time, which will be served on weekends, Orr also ordered Hennessey to perform 50 hours of community service.
Hennessey also must repay $3,843.70 in restitution, she has to pay $300 in victims of crime surcharges and must write apology letters to the team and school.
