The Guardian's readers choose Wade MacLauchlan as top newsmaker

CHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. - Premier Wade MacLauchlan is P.E.I.’s Newsmaker of 2016, according to The Guardian’s readers who voted in our online poll.

MacLauchlan, who was at the centre of many high-profile stories from electoral reform to changes in the education system, was the choice of 29 per cent of people who voted.

That put him ahead of “screencutter” Richard Arsenault, who had 28 per cent of the votes in the unscientific web poll.

Senator Mike Duffy was the third choice at 25 per cent.

When it came to the News Story of 2016, 35 per cent of people who voted chose electoral reform.

The e-gaming controversy was the choice of 26 per cent of voters in the poll, followed by the bomb threat that shut down every school in the province in September, which garnered 16 per cent of the votes.

In total, 69 people voted for the newsmaker and 68 for news story of 2016.
