A man and a woman from Summerside were arrested Wednesday night after police received complaints about people “car shopping” in the Spring Street area.

“Car shopping” is a term used to describe the act of stealing items from unlocked cars.

A 39-year-old man and a 54-year-old woman are facing multiple charges each.

Police said the suspects were located in the Hanover Street area and both were known to police, the male was on probation and under a court order not to have any contact with the female suspect.

Police allege that an officer attempted to take the male suspect into custody but he resisted and ran away. He was caught in a parking lot on Granville Street where he continued to resist and said he was carrying a knife.

The officer drew his conducted electrical weapon (also known as a stun gun), at which point the suspect surrendered and was arrested.

The female suspect was caught hiding in a nearby yard.

The male suspect was still in custody as of Thursday and was scheduled to appear in court to face charges of breach of probation, breach of undertaking, resisting arrest, uttering threats to a police officer, possession of a weapon for dangerous purpose and possession of a prohibited weapon.

The woman was released from custody but will appear in court at a later date to answer to charges of trespassing by night, breach of probation and breach of an undertaking.
