A Stratford man who took a taxi home instead of driving drunk then got into an accident a few hours later was sentenced Monday to seven days in jail.

Shannon Lee Wasnidge, 37, appeared before provincial court Judge Nancy Orr where he pleaded guilty to failing the breathalyzer.

The court heard that on June 18 Wasnidge was drinking and took a taxi home where he realized he left his phone behind.

Wasnidge needed the phone for the next day and after sleeping for several hours he decided to drive to get it.

At around 2:35 a.m. the police responded to a single-vehicle rollover involving Wasnidge and breathalyzer samples showed his blood alcohol level was above the legal limit.

Along with the jail time, Orr ordered Wasnidge to pay a $1,000 fine and $300 victim surcharge.

Wasnidge is banned from driving for one year.
