No matter what happens in the next election, P.E.I.’s legislative assembly will be getting a new Speaker.

Current Speaker Buck Watts confirmed to The Guardian he will not be re-offering in the next election, but he declined to comment further on his decision not to run.

Watts was first elected to represent Tracadie-Hillsborough Park in 2007 and has been serving as Speaker since June 2015.

Before entering politics, Watts spent time as a fisherman, a lobster buyer, a tugboat operator and a restaurant owner.

Along with Watts, Liberal MLAs Kathleen Casey, Alan McIsaac and Al Roach have confirmed they won’t be re-offering.
