Senator Diane Griffin of Prince Edward Island was recently elected as the chairwoman of the Senate Standing Committee on Agriculture and Forestry.

The mandate of the committee is to examine legislation and to study issues related to agriculture and forestry.

The committee has produced substantive reports on issues as diverse as bee health, bovine tuberculosis and rural poverty.

Griffin said it’s a real honour to have been elected by her peers to be the chair of this committee.

“Half of P.E.I. is covered by forest, and agriculture is the largest industry in the province,” said Griffin in a press release. “Agriculture has been a lifelong interest of mine as I was raised and worked on a dairy farm in Traveller’s Rest and was active in the Sherbooke 4-H club.”

Griffin said chairing this committee would provide her with ample opportunity to represent the interests of Prince Edward Island in the Senate.

Having worked in conservation for all of her career, Griffin is looking forward to reviewing policies and legislation related to farmlands and forests.

“I view this committee as a place for farmers, foresters, conservationists and rural Canadians.”
