In the fight over what should be P.E.I.’s provincial animal, the fox has won.

During Tuesday’s night sitting of the legislature, MLAs unanimously voted in favour of making the red fox the animal emblem for P.E.I.

Independent MLA Bush Dumville tabled the bill and after it passed second reading Tuesday he said he was pleased with how everybody co-operated in the legislature.

“I feel just absolutely wonderful,” he said.

Edwena Arbuckle’s Grade 5-6 class from Montague Consolidated School presented the idea to a legislative committee in October.

The committee supported the idea, and Dumville brought the legislation to the floor of the house.

The bill had a bumpy start last month when Liberal MLA Alan McIsaac introduced an amendment to make the Holstein cow the province’s animal instead of the fox.

Dumville only spent a few minutes on the floor Tuesday night after MLAs gave unanimous consent to withdraw the amendment.

Speaking to the media, Dumville said the big winners were Arbuckle’s students.

“I’m so pleased for them,” he said.
