“Rain barrels are a great way to address two concerns; water conservation and storm water management,” said water and sewer utility chair Edward Rice.

“Rain barrels are a great source for outdoor water needs, such as watering plants and gardens. And, the popularity of this initiative shows that citizens are passionate about, and supportive of, our water conservation efforts.”

The barrels are designed to collect rainwater from existing downspouts.

The city’s rain barrels can hold 208 litres of water. Multiple barrels can be added together to increase storage capacity, especially for residents and businesses that consume larger amounts of water for outdoor needs.

Water used from rain barrels is not subject to Charlottetown’s seasonal water restrictions that will come into effect June 1.

Rain barrels can be pre-purchased for $60, including HST, beginning Wednesday, March 22 until May 26 while supplies last. They will be available for pick-up on May 27.

All residents and business owners in Charlottetown are eligible to purchase up to three rain barrels. Visit the water and sewer utility department at City Hall, 199 Queen St.
