City council has given the go ahead to proceed to the public consultation phase for a car rental business in the underground garage of the Prince Edward Delta Hotel by Marriott.

A public meeting with this item on the agenda is planned for tonight at Charlottetown City Hall, starting at 7 p.m.

A recent immigrant to the province approached the hotel about the plan but it had to go to city council’s planning department first.

The applicant wishes to rent seven spaces from the Delta. It is proposed that a limited car rental operation proposed in the waterfront zone would allow up to 10 cars to be permitted.

Coun. Terry MacLeod questioned the wording “vehicles not exceeding one and one-half tonnes’’ in the bylaw and if vehicles of this size should be rented in the waterfront zone.

Alex Forbes, manager of the city’s planning department, said this could refer to larger passenger SUVs, such as a Hummer.

It was also noted that requirements could be vehicles under one tonne and this would limit it to three-quarter tonnes or half-tonne trucks.
