Politicians, community leaders to work convenience store counters in P.E.I.

Some local celebrities will be working behind the counter at local convenience stores throughout Prince Edward Island on Wednesday, Aug. 26, to recognize the community contribution of convenience stores and help raise funds for charity.

The event is the fourth annual Convenience Store Day organized by the Atlantic Convenience Stores Association (ACSA).

“Convenience store operators are an integral part of every community where they’re located,” said Mike Hammoud, president of the ACSA.

Hammoud noted that convenience stores employ thousands of Islanders and make untold contributions to community events.

“Convenience Store Day is a small way of recognizing their hard work and community spirit,” he said. “It is always fun and interesting to see political decision makers and community leaders work behind the counter and get an appreciation for how hard we work and the direct impact we have on the community.”

Heath MacDonald, minister of Economic Development and Tourism, said the stores “provide local jobs; they provide access to necessities like fuel, and food even when others are closed.”

There will be treats for customers and passers-by who drop by Convenience Store Day host stores between 1 and 4 p.m. And for every 20-minute shift worked by a guest personality, the ACSA will make a cash contribution to the Children’s Wish Foundation.

This year Convenience Store Day has grown to 50 stores across the Atlantic provinces, and the ACSA hopes to increase the $45,000 raised for charity in 2014.
