CHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. - A P.E.I. woman who was screaming, kicking and banging her fist in the back of a police vehicle was sentenced to 15 days in jail after having just finished her last sentence.

Rebecca Christine Murphy, 25, pleaded guilty in provincial court in Charlottetown recently to causing damage to a police vehicle and breaching her probation.

On Nov. 16, RCMP responded to a disturbance in Vernon Bridge.

An intoxicated Murphy was placed under arrest for mischief and breach of probation.

Once she was in the back of the police vehicle, she began screaming and kicking the rear right passenger window and door.

Police asked her to stop, but she kept at it.

She also managed to remove the handcuff from her left wrist and began banging on the window.

She was handcuffed again and was taken to the provincial correctional centre for the night.

The court heard that Murphy caused $396.75 in damages to the police vehicle.

Defense attorney Joel Wonnacott said a friend of Murphy’s had died in a motor vehicle accident earlier in the day and that she was having a verbal altercation with her boyfriend at the time.

“She implies to me that she was in a very emotional state of mind and that she wasn’t thinking clearly.”

Wonnacott said Murphy was willing to pay for the damages she caused to the police vehicle.

“She is actually embarrassed about the outcome of her actions,” said Wonnacott.

In addition to incarceration and paying restitution, she must pay $200 to the victims of crime fund.
