CHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. - A judge told a man guilty of common assault that there are ways other than resorting to physical confrontation and violence to deal with disputes.
“It is time to work on positives,’’ Chief Provincial Court Judge Nancy Orr told Shawn Costain.
Orr sentenced Costain Tuesday to 15 days for committing common assault on his then-partner in December.
She also sentenced him to 30 days consecutive for uttering a threat to a 13-year-old girl and 30 days consecutive for careless storage of a firearm.
He only needs to serve 30 days in total.
He was also ordered to refrain from having any contact with the two victims.
Court hear Costain has difficulty controlling his anger and emotions when drinking alcohol.
Orr noted Costain appears to have come to the realization that he needs to address his drinking problem.
He prior record includes uttering threats, failing a breathalyzer and breach of probation.
