A funeral service will be held Monday for well-known Charlottetown businessman Frank J. Dow, who died Thursday at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital at the age of 72.
Dowwas born inRami in what was then Palestine but is now part of Israel. He was one of five children of Mary and Jameal Daou.
The family traveled to Canada by boat when Frank was seven years old, docking in Halifax, then traveling to Charlottetown where they set up housekeeping. They changed their last name from Daou to Dow.
Dow attended West Kent School and Queen Charlotte High School before entering into the world of business with his brother George. As a young man he was very active in sports, playing baseball, rugby and hockey. He was a particularly good hockey player.
Later on he was involved in the operation of the Islanders hockey team as one of the owners.
Dow started several businesses in the city, the best known of which were the Dandy Duds clothing store and the popular eatery Checkers Diner. For the past several years he was the owner and operator of Dow’s Plaza on Belvedere Avenue, which is home to several businesses.
When not engaged in business he loved to play cards and would regularly play with friends atRed Shores. He was also active in his church.
He is survived by his wifeHaifa (Haddad) and by his children, Mary, Jimmy, John and Jason. He is also survived by seven grandchildren and was a godfather of three others.
Dow is also survived by a sister, Georgette, and a brother, George.
He was predeceased by his parents, Jameal and Mary Dow, by a brother Albert and by a sister, Sue.
Remains are resting at the MacLean Funeral Home Swan Chapel. The funeral will take place Mondayfrom Saints Peter and Paul Orthodox Church at 10:30 a.m.
