Justice Minister Jordan Brown says he doesn’t anticipate that groups will be required to legally incorporate as a not-for-profit in order to become an advertiser for the upcoming referendum.
MLA Hannah Bell had raised the issue during Wednesday’s question period, noting the electoral system referendum act sates an organization must be not-for-profit in order to become a registered referendum advertiser.
Bell said the term legally means the organization is incorporated under a provincial or federal statute, which costs time and money.
Brown said he did not want to get “too far out in front” of the bill’s debate but that he felt the draft bill indicates if a group of people are working together the province wouldn’t necessarily require them to incorporate.
“We’ll start from that position and we’ll see where the debate takes us.”
