There’s no such thing as a boring game in the North River Minor Hockey Sweetheart Tournament.
It’s a statement both North River Peewee A players Payton Kelly and Georgia Mallet can attest to.
“We’re in a lot of tournaments throughout the year, like four or five, and this is probably my favourite,” said Kelly. “I don’t know, there’s just something about it that makes it really exciting.

The two defence players are in their sixth year of minor hockey and are well familiar with the tournament, which is now in its 10th year.
Part of the excitement is the scale of the tournament, which features more than 70 teams of all levels showcasing female hockey in Atlantic Canada.
“I like it because we get to play teams from away that we’ve never played before. So it’s kind of something new rather than just playing the same teams from the island,” said Mallett.
Kelly agreed.
“I guess that’s what makes it exciting, we don’t know what to expect.”
Regular play in the tournament continued in eight different rinks on Saturday.
Crossovers will be played Saturday night and Sunday morning, with the championship games being held Sunday afternoon in Crapaud and North River.
The North River Peewee A team has won all three matches of the tournament so far.
The two players will compete in a crossover match Sunday morning in hopes of landing a spot in the championship game.
The two players wished luck to the rest of the host teams.
“This is the 10th year and a North River team has never won,” said Kelly. “We just want to wish them all best of luck.”
