SUMMERSIDE – A new indoor soccer program is kicking off in Summerside on Jan. 15.

The new program called iCanSoccer is offering boys and girls from six to 12 years of age an opportunity to develop their soccer skills.

The summer soccer season is so short that these indoor sessions will help players develop in an area that is sometimes overlooked during the short summer soccer season,” commented iCanSoccer founder and coach Ken Trenholm.

One area the program will focus on is 1-on-1 skills.

"iCanSoccer is about using a fun learning approach with the players to help them gain confidence to try new moves with a soccer ball,” continued Trenholm, who has coached at various levels of youth soccer over the last nine years and became Coerver Coaching Youth certified last year.

Research highlights that many kids stop playing sports because it stops being fun for them.

"I believe fun and learning is not like oil and water," adds Trenholm. "Most people learn better when they are having fun, and these sessions will be both learning-based and fun-based."

Two out of the five groups – under-9 boys and under-10 to 12 girls – are now full, and Trenholm is taking names for a waiting list and potentially increase the number of groups in the spring. There are six open spaces in under-9 girls; two spots remaining in under-10 to 12 goalkeeping, and eight spots left in under-10 to 12 boys.

These one-hour sessions are held in local Summerside school gymnasiums.
