Sean Casey Smith was sentenced to 13 months in jail for several frauds he committed of more than $10,000.

The 30-year-old appeared in provincial court recently for 10 charges related to the use of stolen credit cards at Combat Computers, Most Wanted and different Murphy's Pharmacy locations.

Smith was already on probation when he committed these crimes.

On Oct. 17, 2014, Smith went to Most Wanted and made two separate fraudulent purchases with two different credit cards.

Smith purchased multiple pieces of jewelry and speakers for $4,230.

Between Nov. 25 and Dec. 4, 2014, Smith committed five frauds in six transactions at various Murphy's Pharmacy locations.

He purchased $4,797 worth of gift cards, including Citizen Visa cards, Cineplex cards and Petro cards.

"The transactions were similar in nature," said crown prosecutor Nathan Beck.

Smith was already in custody facing 13 charges in Summerside when these 10 additional charges were laid.

After Smith got out of jail, he pleaded guilty to these charges, a pre-sentence report was ordered and a sentencing date was handed down.

However, Smith disappeared to Ontario and his whereabouts were unknown by his probation officer, which led to him being charged with a standalone breach June 18, 2015, for failing to report as directed by probation services.

Also, as a result of his absence from P.E.I., probation services were unable to prepare the presentence report that was ordered by the court.

Smith returned to P.E.I. and committed another fraud on July 29, 2015, in Charlottetown at Combat Computers, using a compromised credit card number from a victim in Ontario and buying three Dell laptop computers worth $2,059.

Smith has a long and directly related record, stated Beck.

Between 2006 and 2008, Smith had a number of theft-related charges and break and enters in B.C., Ontario and Nova Scotia. Beginning in 2010, Smith had charges in P.E.I. for unlawfully entering a house, fraud, possession of a weapon and possession of drugs for the purpose of trafficking,

"Obviously, the record is very aggravating. It's a continuous, very lengthy record," said Beck. "He just got out of jail serving nine months under similar charges and is right back into the same type of behaviour."

Judge John Douglas sentenced Smith to 13 months with a credit of three months served. Smith has to pay restitution for the fraudulent purchases and refrain from entering Most Wanted, Murphy's Pharmacies and Combat Computers.
