A malfunctioning heater caused an early morning fire Tuesday that damaged one of the trailers involved in the Rogers Hometown Hockey Tour.
Winston Bryan, Charlottetown’s fire inspector, said a passerby noticed the fire and called 911 at 2:50 a.m.
Three fire trucks responded to the fire, which broke out in the trailer where it was stationed on Park Street, one of the parking lots for the Eastlink Centre.
Approximately 30 firefighters were on scene.
“It’s classified as an accidental fire caused within the heating system (of the trailer),’’ Bryan said, adding that there were three heating systems located on the roof of the unit.
“It was an electrical malfunction causing the heater to ignite combustibles within the trailer itself.’’
The Rogers Hometown Hockey Tour is scheduled to take place at Confederation Landing Park Saturday and Sunday, featuring appearances by NHL alumni and host Ron MacLean.
Scotiabank, one of the event’s sponsors along with Dodge, released a statement saying that the event will still go ahead but that some of Scotiabank’s specific activities will be modified.
The senior manager of communications for Rogers' Sportsnet and NHL properties told The Guardian that the fire will not affect the broadcast in any way and that fans will experience the full breadth of the event.
“Scotiabank will deploy that activation, just in a different manner now,’’ said Sebastian Gatica with Rogers, who added that the important news is that no one was hurt.
By activation, Gatica means the trailer would have contained things like company signage and giveaways, such as hats or toques.
Activities scheduled for the weekend include a Sportsnet pre-game show hosted live onside by MacLean before the NHL match Sunday between the Arizona Coyotes and Winnipeg Jets.
Bryan said the fire could have been much worse. The trailer damaged by fire was parked adjacent to others trailers involved in this weekend’s hometown hockey event.
“They could have lost a lot of their stuff,’’ Bryan said.
