The Rogers Hometown Hockey Tour brings a taste of the NHL experience to Charlottetown this weekend.

The tour stops at Confederation Landing Park on Saturday and Sunday with fun, games, interactive activities and the chance to meet NHL alumni, concluding with an outdoor viewing party on Sunday night.

The hockey festival will feature appearances by P.E.I. native and Sportsnet analyst Doug MacLean, Sportsnet hockey personality Ron MacLean and appearances by NHL alumni Jon Sim and former P.E.I. Senator Graeme Townshend.

Things got off to a bit of a rocky start this week when fire destroyed one of the mobile trailers for event sponsor Scotiabank.

Organizers said the event will go ahead as scheduled.

Monday’s snowfall and the cold temperatures since then have helped to create a wintry atmosphere for the two-day festival.

All events at Confederation Landing Park will be free and open to the public.

There will be an inflatable mini-stick rink, face painting and a Sportsnet Magazine cover photo shoot for the kids, commemorative youth hockey jersey giveaways and interactive games.

For those who’ve dreamed of being an NHL broadcaster, there will be an opportunity to call a hockey play alongside Sportsnet Central anchor Evanka Osmak.

There will also be food stations set up and a warming lodge.

The pre-game show for Sunday’s NHL game between the Arizona Coyotes and Winnipeg Jets (7 p.m., City) will be hosted live onsite by MacLean from the mobile studio.

MacLean’s guests will include Olympic gold medal hockey player Jennifer Botterill.

Fans will be able to watch the game on big screens at the site.

Wayne Long, events development officer with the City of Charlottetown, said organizers identified the P.E.I. capital as one of Canada’s iconic hockey communities when scouting locations.

“It gives us the destination exposure that we just couldn’t afford to buy,’’ Long said. “It also creates an opportunity for us to host another high-profile event and be a part of something exciting.’’

The Rogers production will be setting up at the CADC parking lot next to Peakes Quay.

The mobile studio has a transparent wall so anyone who shows up for Sunday’s pre-game show will be on TV.

Long said there will be lots of giveaways, from hats, toques and gloves to chances for big prizes and free hot chocolates and coffee.

“Everything is free. There are no barriers to the general public the entire weekend. We anticipate large crowds throughout the weekend.’’

Parking will not be available at the CADC parking lot because Rogers is using it.

The site operates Saturday from noon to 6 p.m. and Sunday from 1 p.m. to 11 p.m.
