This is the latest installment of the “Picturing a City: Historic Photo Exhibit Series” focuses on an aspect of the city’s history or traditions and displays photos from its archive in the windows of the planning and heritage department (233 Queen St.).
Planning and heritage staff has sifted through the city’s archival collection to feature historical photos from many different eras and locations all over Charlottetown.
The images depict the summer activities and long-held traditions of the city residents, including Old Home Week and “the Exhibition”, backyard camping – Victorian style, a day at the beach in the Edwardian era and swimming lessons in the 1950s off Victoria Park when Queen Elizabeth Drive was still cottage country.
The planning and heritage department acknowledges the individuals who donated images to make the exhibits possible. The exhibit runs until Labour Day (Sept. 4), after which a new exhibit celebrating the history of the city’s schools will be launched in the space.
All exhibits will be posted online at https://charlottetownstories.wordpress.com/.
