Two Island businesses have been given warnings for not storing food at the right temperature.

In July, provincial environmental health inspectors issued warning letters to Rodd Mill River Resort and Cora’s Breakfast and Lunch in Charlottetown.

Ryan Neale, senior environmental health officer with the province, said they actually noted two violations at Cora’s during a routine inspection on July 21.

One was for food not being stored at the proper temperature, either refrigerated or heated.

That leaves food susceptible to developing bacteria.

“The other (violation) was they had no detectable level of sanitizer in the sanitizer pails. Basically, that means food contact surfaces in any food premises need to be cleaned and sanitized to prevent food from becoming contaminated,’’ Neale said.

“In this case, they didn’t have that detectable level of sanitizer in the pails so when they would clean off a counter and sanitize that counter they didn’t have any active ingredients in that sanitizer to actually kill the pathogens that might be there.’’

Neale said the proper way of cleaning any surface that comes in contact with food is to use a mild detergent, followed by applying a chlorine-based sanitizer or ammonium compound-based sanitizer that food businesses mix up on a regular basis.

Inspectors returned to Cora’s on July 29 and discovered that the violations hadn’t been adequately addressed so a warning order was issued. The problem has since been addressed.

Environmental health inspectors have a graduated system when it comes to violations — warning letters, notice of intent to issue a health order and the more serious of the three, the actual health order, which requires immediate action.

During a routine inspection at Rodd Mill River Resort on June 12, inspectors noted food wasn’t being properly stored a the right temperature.

A warning letter was then issued during a followup inspection on July 10. The problem has since been corrected.

Inspectors also issued warning letters in July to the following Island businesses for failing to renew their operating licences on time — Silver Fox Curling and Yacht Club in Summerside, Le Magasin du Coin in Wellington and Handan’s Café in Charlottetown.
