The Canadian Golf Academy in Stratford is reviewing operations in light of a stagnant golf market, says an official with Holland College.
Ken Heckbert, the college’s chief financial officer, says the academy was established primarily to support the golf programs at Holland College.
However, the operation of the academy in the summer is an ancillary service that is designed to offset some of the costs of the college’s golf programs, he said.
And the golf industry has not exactly been thriving in the province in recent times.
“I don’t think it’s a secret that rounds of golf have been down the last couple of years,’’ said Heckbert.
The academy, which is owned and operated by the college, opened at Fox Meadow Golf Course in Stratford in May 2006 after operating for several years in Brudenell.
Heckbert says operations at the academy, which has been named Canada’s No. 1 golf facility by Score Magazine, will “be different’’ this summer.
Details of what changes will occur at the academy, which has offered golf lessons, golf classes, golf programs and golf clinics for years, should be known in a couple of weeks.
“We’re planning to use the golf academy in some fashion this summer.”
The use of the academy for students of the golf programs, he adds, will also continue.
