SUMMERSIDE - Efforts to renovate Summerside’s library got a boost today with the announcement of more than $1.2 million in funding for a new community learning centre in the city.

The Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA) announced today a $791,598 contribution for the library through the Innovative Communities Fund.

The Rotary Club of Summerside is contributing $450,000 to the project.

That club is in the process of buying the former post office building on Central Street with plans to use part of it for the regional community learning centre.

Plans for the centre include the library, meeting rooms, business work stations and community space to develop entrepreneurial skills, support business development, and facilitate lifelong learning.

Renovations will include upgrades to the building, installation of a new heating and cooling system, a new security system, and improvements to accessibility.
