CHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. - It looks like P.E.I. will get a little reprieve from the frigid temperatures Friday.

A low-pressure system south of Nova Scotia may bring some light flurry activity to the province, but it will bring in some milder temperatures with it.

The forecast for Friday is -8 C. However, the minus single digit temperatures will be short lived, at least for the weekend.

Linda Libby, meteorologist with Environment and Climate Change Canada, says Saturday and Sunday will be -13 C during the day, but those temperatures will drop to -18 C Saturday night and -16 C Sunday night.

“We need to dress for it,” said Libby. “No more sneaking out in the crocs.”

Libby said the coldest part of the day Saturday will feel like -22 C and the coldest part of the day Sunday will feel like -25 C with the wind chill.

“If anybody is travelling, you need to be checking the forecast and making sure you have stuff in case you break down, especially if you are going to a place that doesn’t get a lot of traffic,” said Libby. “Be prepared in case the worst case happens.”

Libby says New Year’s Day and Tuesday could potentially see a moderation of temperatures in the minus single digits.

Long-range models are showing a possible big weather system for next Thursday.

Libby says this system could start as snow and turn to rain.

“That one could actually give us above freezing temperatures, but only with the weather system,” said Libby.

“It could bring us warmer air, the only downside right now, there is no good clue about what the air is going to be like once that system moves away from us. It could be as cold as it is now. It could be unfortunately colder or it could be warmer.”
