Veteran fisheries journalist and broadcaster Mack Campbell had a sharp sense of humour, which he probably used to good effect during a 6 a.m. phone call to Wayne Collins earlier this year.

Mack was doing what he loved so passionately, managing the 24-hour radio station for the East Coast Music Week event held this year in Charlottetown.

Seems the scheduled host for a 2 a.m. shift hadn't shown up, so Campbell slid behind the microphone and carried on until the more respectable time of 6 a.m to call Collins, retired CBC radio host,  for help. Campbell probably took the opportunity to unleash one of his favourite phrases about the errant DJ, "what is wrong with him?!" while being both aghast and delighted with the situation.

That was in April.

Campbell died peacefully at home Wednesday after a long battle with cancer. He was 69.

DEATH NOTICE

Campbell was from Cape Breton where he began his radio career before coming to the CBC on P.E.I. He became expert in fisheries matters, running a regional radio show called Soundings, then working with Ian Pitre for what was then Radio Noon.

Campbell carried on writing on fisheries matters after his retirement, working with Fisheries and Oceans Canada and as a freelance journalist.

He loved working with the ECMA program, and was active supporting the Festival of Small Halls program on P.E.I.

On Oct. 24 family and friends organized a gathering at John Brown Richmond Street Grille in Charlottetown in honour of Campbell. The Belfast Pipe and Drums opened the night, Matt Minglewood closed it while in between was Patrick Ledwell, many friends and colleagues, Rik Barron up from the U.S., Cynthia MacLeod, plus the Brad Fremlin, Perry Williams and Alan Rankin trio.

Visiting hours in memory of Campbell will be held at Belvedere Funeral Home, Friday from 5 to 8 p.m.  His funeral is Saturday at St. Paul’s Anglican Church at 11 a.m.

"He will be missed," said Collins.
