The QMJHL hockey fan started a Facebook petition to try and persuade Wade Babineau to come out of retirement and get the place rocking when the Charlottetown Islanders take on the Blainville-Boisbriand Armada on Friday.
The Islanders are going to the third round for the first time in its history and the team needs all the cheering it can get, Maclachlan said on his Facebook post.
“Nobody, and I mean nobody can get the rink going like he can. We need him as we go forward to support the team.”
But Babineau says 22 years was long enough to wear the plastic conehead. In fact, he says the hat was cut into pieces and has gone to the landfill.
Babineau knows all the guys posting on the petition for him to return and why they want him back.
“We’re in the third round and they want me to give the team a boost by acting goofy and carrying on. But they got there because they’re a good team. They’re 8-0.”
Babineau appreciates the sentiment of the petition, but said he is looking to current and future fans to carry the torch.
“It’s a good thing. There are a group of fans coming up who don’t know who Conehead was. But there are guys like Hockey Hat Guy who does his thing and it’s catching on.”
Babineau said if those posting on the petition want to do something, they should make their own flags or wear horns.
“It would mean more to the team to have 3,800 act like (Conehead) did instead of one individual.”
But Babineau says he hasn’t taken a vow of silence.
“It’s not going to be like it was before. I still get up and cheer when the team scores. I hope the team goes all the way. It’s exciting.”
Jason MacLean, director of sales and marketing for the Islanders, says after their retirement ceremony for the Conehead, they understand Babineau’s decision.
“We appreciate everything he did and by still being here as a fan. We respect the fact he’s retired the cone.”
