The number of beds in Geneva Villa will expand from 37 to 50 after city council approved the request for a lot consolidation recently.

A community care facility on Walthen Drive in Charlottetown will be undergoing an expansion soon.

City council unanimously approved the request for a lot consolidation for two parcels of land at 78-80 Walthen Drive.

That allows the owner of Geneva Villa to increase the number of beds from 37 to 50.

"It's one of the best community care facilities in Canada,'' said Coun. Mitchell Tweel, who represents the area.

Tweel said the city received 50 letters from residents supporting the expansion, as well as a few letters of concern.

"I'm hoping those concerns will be addressed.''

The concerns include the presence of more waste watch bins on the property and the number of parking spots.

Efforts are being made to conceal the bins as much as possible, possibly hiding them behind a hedge.

Coun. Rob Lantz, chair of planning, said the city will provide a total of 20 parking spaces for the facility.

Tweel said the project is a win-win for the neighbourhood, allowing residents in their senior years to stay in the community.

"A lot of residents in this community are happy with this project. It will allow residents to stay in the community,'' Tweel said.

An adjacent duplex is being knocked down to make room for the expanding community care facility.

Tweel said he's had a number of discussions with staff and the owner and says the added space will be consistent with what exists in the area now.
