More than 70 per cent of Charlottetown’s water and sewer customers are now on the meter program.

The installation program launched in 2015.

The City of Charlottetown reports that 10,000 customers are now metered with approximately 3,000 customers left to make the switch. With the speed of installations, the city expects to have all customers metered by the end of 2017, ahead of the goal of having everyone on a meter by the end of 2019.

“The completion date of December 2017 coincides nicely with the Miltonvale wellfield project, which is slated for activation in 2017,” said Coun. Eddie Rice, chairman of the city’s Water and Sewer Utility committee. “With the wellfield project, we committed to our residents and funding partners to implement a water conservation plan and leak detection program. Universal metering is integral to both of these measures and it demonstrates our commitment and the commitment of our residents to sustainable and efficient water usage.”

To further encourage customers to make the switch to a metered account, there will be a $50/quarter surcharge added to flat-rate bills, beginning in January. Customers that complete the meter switch within the quarter will be refunded the $50 surcharge when their bill is changed from a flat-rate to metered rate.

Rice said the intention is to promote water usage awareness, preserve the city’s water supply and reduce overall consumption in Charlottetown.

“The program allows for better tracking, better leak detection and encourages the public to continue conserving. We have seen an increase in conservation efforts over the past few years – and we thank the public for that – but, collectively, we can always do more. This project will complement those efforts, while strengthening the protection of this limited resource.”
