Charlottetown wants opinions for Holland College residence

CHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. – Holland College’s wish to build a new student residence is going to a public meeting on Tuesday night.

This will be the second public meeting for the issue.

The college hosted the first one while this one will be hosted by city council.

The meeting begins at 7 p.m. in the MacKinnon Lecture Theatre. People are asked to use the Grafton Street entrance in the Charlottetown Centre Weymouth Street building.

Holland College wants to erect an 81-bed residence at the corner of Grafton and Cumberland streets.

The college has asked to amend the future land use map from commercial and medium density residential to institutional and from mixed use corridor zone and medium density residential to institutional.

It would involve rezoning a number of different properties – 302-304 Grafton Street, 92 Cumberland Street, 306 Grafton Street, 310 Grafton Street, 90 Cumberland Street, 84-86 Cumberland Street, 78-82 Cumberland Street and 74 Cumberland Street.

Council will hold another public meeting that week that involves rezoning.

Council will hear any questions or concerns regarding the properties at 355 Queen Street and 246 Sydney Street.

The meeting will be held today at 7 p.m. in City Hall.

The owner of 355 Queen Street is looking for a site specific amendment to the medium density residential zone in order to permit a take-out restaurant (maximum of 75 square feet in area) to operate within the existing convenience store.

As for 246 Sydney Street, the owner is asking for a site specific amendment to the downtown neighbourhood zone in order to permit three fascia signs and to permit short and long-term rental of 22 apartment units.

Anyone wishing to view any of the proposals may do so at the planning and heritage department at 233 Queen Street between 8:30 a.m. and 5 p.m., Monday to Friday.
