Taxi drivers in Charlottetown will now have to display their picture ID where customers can see it and provide a debit and credit card machine as a payment option.

Charlottetown city council passed a bylaw amendment to include these new rules at a special meeting Thursday at noon. The motion passed unanimously.

Jennifer Gavin, the city’s communications officer, said that the city called the special meeting because with tourist season approaching, council wanted the matter dealt with before the next meeting in May.

Council had already discussed and passed the taxi bylaw amendment, but because of a typo it had to start the formal process all over again. The bylaw amendment once again passed with a 7-0 vote.

Coun. Jason Coady said it was just a small mistake.

“We had the bylaw written out on an old form that required three readings, but we only do two readings now,” he said.

“We don’t use those old forms anymore.”

City council also passed the second reading of a bylaw amendment regarding council size because of a new Municipal Government Act issued in April stating the Charlottetown and Summerside city council is allowed no more than eight council members and one mayor.

Since Charlottetown has 10 councillors and one mayor, the city moved to amend the bylaw to allow more than eight councillors to stay.

The bylaw amendment had to be reviewed at the special meeting Thursday because the Municipal Government Act requires it to be in place prior to an election. This amendment also passed 7-0.

Everyone was in agreement at today’s meeting, Coady said.

“There was no debate or discussion today.”
