The Council of the Resort Municipality is holding a public meeting tonight at eight o’clock in the Cavendish Visitor Information Centre.
Residents and other interested parties will be given an opportunity to review and comment on a request for a major development on land owned by Cavendish Tourism Complex Development Inc.
Council chairman, Matthew Jelley, is encouraging people to come to the meeting to learn about the developer’s plans.
“We try to work with developers,’’ said Jelley.
In addition to the rental cottages, the proposed development calls for a playground, office, swimming pool and six year-round rental units all to be built on property behind the former Cavendish Shopping Centre.
The developer has voiced interest in starting construction in the summer of 2017 on a 46-acre property that has a scenic water view and the nearby Confederation Trail.
Jay Dong is the man behind Cavendish Tourism Complex Development.
He moved his family of three from China to P.E.I. in 2008.
In 2010, he bought Avonlea Cottages in Cavendish for between $800,000 and $1 million.
He invested money into upgrading the cottages. He also put a strong emphasis on marketing.
He started the Cavendish Farmers’ Market in July 2015, keen to partner with farmers, fishermen, artisans, artists and food vendors.
Last year, Dong told The Guardian he has five silent Chinese business partners behind a long-term, multi-million dollar project that could eventually employ about 50 people if all goes according to plan.
He also noted that he was eager to encourage Chinese newcomers to start businesses in P.E.I.
“With the benefit of my experience as a tourism operator, I am offering myself as mentor for other immigrants who might be interested in investing in tourism,’’ Dong said in an August, 2015 interview with The Guardian.
