Chase Joseph Douglas Aslantogmus, 20, appeared before Judge John Douglas in provincial court Thursday in Charlottetown where his lawyer asked for the assessment.

The court heard Aslantogmus had a history of mental health issues.

On Sept. 12, a 21-year-old man was stabbed in a Charlottetown apartment building.

He was taken to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital with what the police said were serious, but not life-threatening stab wounds.

During Aslantogmus’s court appearance Thursday about a dozen people were in the public gallery to watch his case.

He tried to communicate with some of them several times, including mouthing words and using hand motions from the behind the glass in the prisoner’s box.

Aslantogmus has been in custody since his arrest.

He wore a grey suit to court Thursday with a cross hanging around his neck and sat at the defence table with his wrists cuffed while his lawyer spoke.

After hearing the defence request, Douglas ordered Aslantogmus to undergo an assessment to see if he is fit to stand trial.

Aslantogmus will be back in court Nov. 2.
